Safety Notice: OSU Corvallis Campus

Safety Notices inform the Oregon State University community of recent incidents regarding personal safety and/or the protection of property. Please read the following information carefully to make informed decisions about your safety and property.

Reported Event: The Department of Public Safety is investigating multiple thefts of electric scooters/bicycles that have occurred within the last couple weeks. Based on information provided to DPS, the following patterns were identified.

  • More bicycle and electric scooter thefts are occurring around on-campus residential buildings.
  • Bicycles and scooters left outside of residential buildings for extended periods of time are being targeted.
  • Cable locks are consistently defeated.
  • Perpetrators specifically target scooters that are either not locked or insufficiently secured. For example, a cable lock loosely wrapped around the stem can be easily manipulated to release the scooter.

Response Options and Resources: Consider the following to reduce opportunities for theft.

  • If you must leave your bicycle or scooter outside for extended periods of time, secure it with a high-quality lock.
  • If possible, avoid using only a cable lock. Consider using two locks of different types, such as a U-lock and cable lock, that require a thief to use different methods to free the secured scooter or bicycle.
  • If using GPS tracking devices, consider placing them in areas that are not easily seen or immediately accessible to the thief.
  • Keep a record of your serial number in case of theft.
  • Assess your scooter for secure locking points, such as using a U-lock behind the front wheel on the folding arm between the stem and the deck.
  • Keep an eye on reported bicycle and scooter thefts by visiting page 2 of the Public Safety Dashboard: https://beav.es/x7A.

Anyone with information about these incidents or other criminal behavior occurring within the OSU community is encouraged to call DPS at 541-737-7000 (emergency) or 541-737-3010 (non-emergency).
